The Bible gives greater honor, respect, and importance to fathers than our TV, movies, and society do. The Biblical household code is based on the blessings that Jesus brought (and NOT on the curse of Genesis 3). Fathers are given the honorable task of telling their children about the great deeds of God.

Whether considering the church in Sardis or a modern day congregation or an individual Christian, the reality of a person's situation is more important than just their reputation. Some Christians, like those in Sardis, are called to 'Wake Up'.

The church in Thyatira is told not to tolerate the sin of Jezebel. Don't just accept society's view of sexual sin. As Christians we are called to struggle against sin to overcome it.

Know that you are blessed in Christ. If we are not careful we may let our consumer culture cause us to become discontent even though we have great blessings. Paul provides a great example of someone who did NOT allow his circumstances to define him. While in prison he declared that God blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

The Ephesians lived in a very challenging place for Christians and they stood strong in their good doctrine and in their good works. Still they were called to repent, because they had left their love for Christ. Historians indicate that the Ephesians did repent and return to their love for Christ. As Christians we also need to remember our love for Christ.

Jesus brought a change of society as he broke down the wall that divided the Gentiles from the Jews. Jesus brought the two together into the household of God.
Jesus is our peace. In Him, all Christians should come together and work together to break down the walls which separate people and cause hostility.
Quotes from the sermon (or close paraphrases) follow:
What is the main characteristic that determines who we are?
When we come to Christ, the governing aspect of who we are becomes the blood of Christ. It does not matter what you were. It is who you now are in Jesus that shapes everything you do. That is the defining characteristic that shapes who you are.
When we come to Christ, what is the dominant aspect of who you are? It is not your gender; it is not your race; it is not your ethnicity; it is not your education; it is not how much money you make; it is not your how sick or well you are. The dominant characteristic that shapes who you are is the blood of Jesus Christ.
